New Orleans Saints Fired Head Coach Dennis Allen

New Orleans Saints Fired Head Coach Dennis Allen

He was brought on board with the team on February 8, 2022 becoming the 17th head coach of the franchise. But today that association ended as the New Orleans Saints fired their head coach, Dennis Allen. After starting the season 2-0 and then going on a seven-game losing streak the termination is not a surprise. The Saints have named Special Teams Coordinator Darren Rizzi as their interim head coach. He was named special teams coordinator for the New Orleans Saints on February 11, 2019. And also became an assistant head coach in 2022 under Head Coach Dennis Allen.

Below is a statement from Saints’ owner Gayle Benson regarding the decision to relieve Allen of his duties:

“Dennis has been part of our organization for many years. He is highly regarded within the NFL. He has been extremely loyal and professional and most importantly an excellent football coach for us. All of this makes today very tough for me and our organization,” said Saints Owner Gayle Benson. “However, this decision is something that I felt we needed to make at this time. I wish nothing but the best in the future for Dennis and his family. He will always be considered in the highest regard by me and everyone within our organization.”

Saints Executive Vice President and General Manger Mickey Loomis also made a statement about Allen:

“DA is an excellent football coach. This season, we have had an avalanche of injuries. It took its toll. DA has never offered excuses, he fought each day for this organization and this team and that is what makes today disappointing. Dennis has been an integral part of this organization’s success for the better part of twenty years. He will be missed.”

Loomis is correct about the injury issues the Saints have suffered. QB Derek Carr just returned to the game yesterday after his oblique injury. However, the loss to the division rival Carolina Panthers was likely the last straw. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell pointed out a stat that sums up the Saints’ issues perfectly:

“Saints outgained the Panthers by 150+ yards, ran for 150+ yards, and won the turnover battle Over the last 20 years, teams had gone 275-0 with that formula. Now 275-1.”

If you are winning in all the key statistical categories how do you still lose the game? According to Nick Underhill of New Orleans Football:

Saints owner Gayle Benson reached out to players last week, meeting with some and trading emails with others. “Multiple players told her that the program was failing and that changes weren’t just needed but urgent.”

Rizzi will have his hands full trying to salvage the Saints’ 2024 season.
