What Went Down During NFL Week 8 Sunday Action

What Went Down During NFL Week 8 Sunday Action

It was a jam-packed day of football this Sunday because no teams were on a bye week. There were 14 games  including the Sunday Night Football game between the Cowboys and 49ers. So we’ll tell you about some of what went down during NFL Week 8 Sunday action. For starters Haason Reddick was finally suited up for the New York Jets after a lengthy holdout. And Dalvin Cook made his debut for the Cowboys after being tucked away on the practice squad all season. Read on for more interesting tidbits.

Ravens @ Browns – Jameis Winston was on the field in place of Deshaun Watson who is out for the rest of the season. He hadn’t played a game since 2022 but it didn’t look like it. He had zero interceptions and helped the Browns score the most points in a game this season. It was a back-and-forth battle and receivers on both teams had too many dropped balls. The Ravens defense gave up a touchdown in the last two minutes. Lamar Jackson got his team within scoring range but couldn’t pull off the last second win. Cleveland got their second victory 24-29.

Titans @ Lions – The Lions put a beat down on the Titans. Detroit did whatever they wanted to do on both sides of the ball. Khalif Raymond returned a punt for 90 yards and Jahmyr Gibbs banged out a 70-yard touchdown run, you see where I’m going here? It’s hard to win while giving up big plays. The Titans trailed by 7 after the first quarter but the Lions scored 38 points during the 2nd and 3rd quarters. There was no coming back and the Titans lost 14-52.

Colts @ Texans – It was another tight back-and-forth battle in Houston. Colts went with Anthony Richardson at QB. He had a 69-yard touchdown bomb to Josh Downs who was inexcusably wide open. Other than that both defenses were stout in the first half resulting in several punts. But the Texans orchestrated two touchdown drives to take the lead. The Colts scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter and had time to try to take the lead. But they couldn’t capitalize on a Houston fumble. Richardson also failed to get out of bounds after a 26-yard run with less than 40 seconds on the clock. So the Texans held on for the 20-23 divisional win.

Packers @ Jaguars – Neither team could get their offense going in the first quarter. Opening the second quarter Jordan Love led his team on a promising drive but it ended with an interception. But two plays later Trevor Lawrence was intercepted. The Packers picked up a touchdown thanks to the turnover. Love was injured in the third quarter and Malik Willis came in the game. Between Willis and RB Josh Jacobs the Packers kept pace with the Lions and ended up with the 30-27 win.

Cardinals @ Dolphins – Tua was back on the field returning from his concussion injury. Miami looked better with him back on the field. But the Cardinals offense is looked much improved. Marvin Harrison Jr. was much more involved in the game as was tight end Trey McBride. On National Tight Ends Day, McBride led the Cardinals with 124 yards receiving on nine catches against the NFL’s No. 1 passing defense. The Cardinals had allowed Tua to convert multiple third downs. But at the end the Cardinals kicked the game-winning field goal. The 28-27 win has them tied atop the NFC West division.

More Notes On The Early Sunday Games

Jets @ Patriots – Drake Maye literally got the ball rolling when he ran it in for a 17 yard touchdown. He too was the victim of receivers dropping a lot of well-thrown passes. In the second quarter Maye was hit helmet-to-helmet by a Jets defender but no penalty was called. He was out with a concussion for the rest of the game. But Jacoby Brissett came in and kept the team competitive. Thanks to an excellent punt return the Patriots scored a touchdown to start their second half. A missed Jets field goal was the difference in the game. It was the Patriots second win with a score of 22-25. Guess the Patriots aren’t as soft as head coach Jerod Mayo had said.

Falcons @ Buccaneers – The Tampa Bay creamsicle throwback uniforms were in full effect paying homage to the teams of the 70’s and 80’s. They were without Chris Godwin and Mike Evans but found ways to keep up with Falcons scoring. Ultimately the three turnovers couldn’t be overcome. So the Falcons outlasted and outscored the Bucs 31-26..

Eagles @ Bengals – The Eagles got off to a slow start and the Bengals jumped out to a 10-3 lead. Bengals’ tight end Mike Gesicki was a beast in the first half which was good because WR Tee Higgins was inactive. Joe Burrow hit his first seven passes and converted his first seven third-down passes. But the Eagles scored a touchdown on their opening third quarter drive. Then the Bengals started the third quarter with a 17 play drive that ended with a two-yard touchdown pass. However, the Bengals offense stalled after that and committed two turnovers in the fourth quarter. The Eagles kept the pedal to the metal and beat the Bengals 37-17.

Afternoon Games News And Notes

Saints @ Chargers – The Chargers had no trouble handling the Saints. But the Saints offense couldn’t score and their defense couldn’t stop giving up big plays. The frustration of the Saints defense was showing when one defender tackled QB Justin Herbert and twisted his leg. No penalty was called against the defense on the play. But there was a flag against Charger’s offensive lineman Bradley Bozeman for going after the defender. The Saints are in a downward spiral. But the 26-8 win helped the Chargers get back on track.

Bills @ Seahawks – The Seahawks defense couldn’t slow down the Bills offense. The Bills offense had gained 445 yards, the second most by a Seahawks opponent this year and had 29 first downs. Twice the Seahawks had first-and-goal inside the 10-yard line but silly miscues only afforded them one field goal. Seattle has some work to do but the Bills just keep on rolling as they got the 31-10 victory.

Bears @ Commanders – The No.1 and No. 2 2024 NFL Draft picks went head to head today. It was a duel with a lot on the line for both teams. However, I think this is the craziest stat of the game: the teams had 1 combined TD on the first 21 drives of the game and 2 TD’s in the final 25 seconds of the game. After Williams led his team on a touchdown drive the Bears took the lead with 27 seconds on the clock. Jayden Daniels connected on two passes for 24 yards putting the Commanders at their 48 yard line. He then heaved a Hail Mary pass to end zone. It was tipped by a Bears defender right to Noah Brown who was standing all alone in the end zone. The Commanders prevailed in the dramatic 15-18 win.

Additional Thoughts On The Later Games

Panthers @ Broncos – It was redemption day for Bryce Young getting another shot at the starting QB position. Things started well for the Panthers on both sides of the ball. The defense recovered a Broncos fumble on their first possession. And the offense moved efficiently down the field and converted the turnover into a touchdown on their first drive. After that the wheels fell off. Bo Nix got his offense under control and took charge. They scored 28 unanswered points in the second and third quarters. The Panthers scored another touchdown in the fourth quarter but the game was out of reach at that point. Their now at 1-7 with the 14-28 loss to the Broncos.

Chiefs @ Raiders – Gardner Minshew got the start at QB for the Raiders. After the Chiefs scored on their first drive, Minshew and the Raiders responded with a well-executed scoring TD drive of their own. But the Raiders then missed opportunities to score. For example in the third quarter they couldn’t punch the ball into the end zone from the 3-yard line on four attempts. Minshew had a fumble that the Chiefs converted into a touchdown. The Raiders responded with a touchdown. They tried an onside kick but the Chiefs recovered it. They took a knee to win the game 27-20.

Sunday Night Football Game Notes

Cowboys @ 49ers – The Dallas Cowboys were matching blow for blow with the 49ers. They scored the only touchdown in the first half and even took a lead into halftime. But Brock Purdy mustered his troops and led his team on three masterful touchdown drives. And for most of the second half the Cowboys couldn’t answer.

Dak Prescott was under intense pressure throughout the night. Although he threw for two touchdowns he also had two interceptions. They mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter but the 49ers defense stiffened up when it counted the most. They got a much needed stop to prevent the Cowboys from scoring. The 49ers held on for the 24-30 victory.
