Vikings Felled By Rams As Puka And Cooper Returned to Action

I thought the Vikings would run away with the game. But silly me, I forgot an important piece of information. As a result, the Vikings were felled by the Rams as Puka Nacua and Cooper Kupp returned to action. And their presence was felt immediately. Stafford sought out both players throughout the game finding much success. And after starting 5-0 the Vikings have now lost two in a row.

The Vikings got the ball first and moved efficiently down the field. QB Sam Darnold was 4 for 4 and 49 yards on the opening drive capped by a short 5-yard pass to Josh Oliver for the touchdown. The Rams spent about 4 minutes in answering with a touchdown of their own. Matthew Stafford’s first pass to Nacua was dropped but he caught the second one and just about every other pass thrown his way. He didn’t look rusty at all despite not having played since Week 1.

It was rinse and repeat as the Vikings came back and scored their second touchdown. And the Rams did likewise. But then the defense for each team started getting pressure on the quarterbacks. So for the rest of the half both teams were forced to punt multiple times. They were tied 14-14 when the Rams started the third quarter. Stafford threw a beautiful pass to Nacua who somehow got both feet down inbound. But it was all for nothing because Byron Murphy picked off an overthrown pass intended for Demarcus Robinson.

The Vikings got to the Rams 8-yard line but the Rams defense held them to a field goal. And that set the tone for the remainder of the night for the Vikings. They could only muster one more field goal for the rest of the game.

Part of the issue for the Vikings was losing left tackle Christian Darrisaw to injury. With 35 seconds left on the clock and on their 3-yard line they could have taken a knee. Instead they ran a play and that’s when Darrisaw was hurt. Then the Vikings took a knee to end the half. But as they say hindsight is 20/20.

David Queensberry replaced Darrishaw who was not as effective. The Vikings also needed to get Justin Jefferson more involved in the second half. I expect the  Vikings will make the necessary adjustments.

As for the Rams, they look like a different team with Nacua and Kupp back on the field. They open up opportunities for other players to get involved in the game plan. And with his top two weapons back on board Stafford looked sharp. Their opponents should beware.
