Gone way too soon. This year the sports realm has lost so many legends, greats as well as individuals on their to achieving and attaining to such elite ranks. One amazing man that certainly fits such a description is the coach of USF who after a tireless battle has unfortunately lost his health battle. On Thursday afternoon, it was announced that University of South Florida men’s basketball coach Amir Abdur-Rahim has passed at 43.
This is never the news anyone wants to learn of or the kind of news anyone wishes to convey. Just ask Tampa Bay Times writer Joey Knight who was among the first to report on the passing of Amir Abdur-Rahim. With a heavy heart Knight states,
“Hate to be the bearer of this horrific news: USF men’s basketball coach Amir Abdur-Rahim has died following an aggressive illness. I’m expecting the school to release some type of statement shortly.”
And he was correct. Shortly after the news started to spread USF did release a statement. The school briefly mentions,

“We are heartbroken over the passing of Coach Abdur-Rahim.

A tremendous man & leader with an infectious personality that was a shining light to all he encountered.

Our thoughts & prayers are with his family, friends and everyone that he left a lasting impact on.”

Amir was known for his great attitude as well as personality, being a hard worker, and his impeccable coaching acumen. A rising star that had an even greater future on the way. But his achievements will always be remembered.

Abdur-Rahim was the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year this past season. Following a 25-8 record, he led the Bulls to their first regular-season conference championship. And he led them to their first-ever top 25 ranking during the regular season. Reaching as high as no. 24 in the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Poll.

Abdur-Rahim is survived by his wife, Arianne, and three children. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Amir. As well as with his colleagues and players.
