New York Jets Are Parting Ways With Robert Saleh-Official statement from Woody Johnson

New York Jets Fire Robert Saleh-Official statement from Woody Johnson

The Jets aren’t known for making midseason coaching changes. Yet, here we are. It was announced Tuesday morning that the New York Jets fired Robert Saleh in an official statement from Jets Chairman Woody Johnson.

Johnson’s statement regarding the firing of Saleh reads as follows:

“This morning, informed Robert Sale that he will no longer serve as the Head Coach of the Jets. thanked him for his hard work these past three-and-a-half years and wished him and his family well moving forward. This was not an easy decision, but we are not where we should be given our expectations, and I believe now is the best time for us to move in a different direction.

Jeff Ulbrich will serve as our Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the season. He is a tough coach who has the respect of the coaches and players on this team. I believe he along with the coaches on this staff can get the most out of our talented team and attain the goals we established this offseason.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter also confirmed and revealed additional details regarding the New York Jets dismissal of Saleh. Including some nice franchise historical intel. He mentions,

“ESPN sources: Jets fired HC Robert Saleh. Jets informed Robert Saleh of their decision minutes ago. There will be a new head coach for Monday night’s game vs. Buffalo. Jets informed Robert Saleh of their decision minutes ago. There will be a new head coach for Monday night’s game vs. Buffalo. Robert Saleh’s tenure with the Jets comes to an end for 20–36 record. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich is being named the New York Jets interim head coach, per source.

Robert Saleh went through six different starting quarterbacks during his time with the Jets: Zach Wilson: 33 games, Mike White: 7 games, Aaron Rodgers: 6 games; Joe Flacco: 5 games, Trevor Siemian: 3 games and Tim Boyle: 2 games. The last head coach to be fired five games into a regular season was when Carolina fired Matt Rhule after a 1-4 start in 2022. Robert Saleh’s firing marks the first time in owner Woody Johnson’s 25-year tenure that he has fired a coach during the season.

This will be the first time that the Jets have made an in-season coaching change since Lou Holtz resigned before the final game of the 1976 season. Mike Holovak took over the club for the final game, a 42-3 loss to the Bengals. It’s just the 3rd time the Jets have made an in-season coaching change, with the other 2 coming in consecutive years.

1975: Charley Winner was fired after 2-7 start; Ken Shipp took over and went 1-4.

1976: Lou Holtz resigned after 3-10 start; Mike Holovak took over and went 0-1.”

Currently, the Jets have a losing record. They sit at 2-3 going into Week 6. With plenty of season left they hope to turn the season around with a change at the helm. But will it be enough? Does this address the true issues of the Jets’ lack of success? Only time will tell.
