New York Jets Part Ways With Head Coach Robert Saleh

We knew things weren’t going well for the Jets and that they aren’t where they think they should be. But did we know things were so extreme that they made a major change? I certainly didn’t think this was coming. But it was reported today that the New York Jets have parted ways with head coach Robert Saleh. Saleh, hired in January 2021, finished with a 20-36 mark as head coach. This news comes on the heels of rumors about the coach and quarterback Aaron Rodgers not getting along. Adam Schefter posted on his social media account:

“Jets owner Woody Johnson said he spoke to Aaron Rodgers on Monday night, but it wasn’t about Robert Saleh. Johnson said Rodgers had no input in the decision made this morning.”

The team announced this morning that defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich would serve as the team’s interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Through five games, Ulbrich has led a defensive unit that ranks No. 1 in yards/play (4.26) and No. 2 in yards allowed/game (255.8). The Jets have racked up 18 sacks, their most after five games since 2008. Chairman Woody Johnson said about Ulbrich:

“He is a tough coach who has the respect of the coaches and players on this team. I believe he along with the coaches on this staff can get the most out of our talented team and attain the goals we established this offseason.”

Johnson further commented about the situation: “This was not an easy decision, but we are not where we should be given our expectations, and I believe now is the best time for us to move in a different direction,” Chairman Woody Johnson said in a statement.”

And in spite of their offensive struggles, the Jets will be retaining offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. Rodgers has a previous relationship with Hackett going back to their Green Bay Packers days from 2019-2021. However, the new interim coach will look to Rodgers for his expertise:

“I have a good relationship with Aaron,” Ulbrich, 47, said. “He is, he’s one of those guys that has … he has just unbelievable experience and he’s seen this game at the highest level for a long time. So he’s a guy with a lot of ideas and really positive feedback about a lot of different things, whether it be meetings, practice, game-planning, scheduling, all of it. So, he will be a vital resource for me in that way, for sure.”

We’ll see how the coaching change works as the season progresses. Their first challenge will be to face AFC East rival Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.
