Padres Beat Down the Dodgers in Game 2 of NLDS Winning 10-2

The National League delivered the drama on Sunday providing the masses with plenty of sports cinema. The Phillies and Mets duked it out with Philadelphia tying the series up 1-1. And San Diego got its turn to do the same and boy did they. SD straight up demolished Los Angeles sending a strong message. Don’t count them out yet. In historic fashion, the Padres beat down the Dodgers in Game 2 of the NLDS winning 10-2.

According to Major League Baseball: The Padres tied a single-game MLB postseason record by hitting six home runs, including two from Tatis. The 2023 Phillies and 2015 Cubs previously also belted six (both in an NLDS Game 3), but the Padres became the first team to do so in a road playoff game.

While the Padres did ball out, one major piece of the winning component can not be ignored… pitcher Yu Darvish. San Diego’s veteran ace not only kept Shohei Ohtani in check; but really the entire Dodgers lineup. They had no answers. Over the course of eight innings Los Angeles could only manage to get one run in. Yu tossed an absolute gem and the Padres bullpen (Tanner Scott and Alek Jacob) held the humongous lead.

One of the aspects of the Padres success has been their extensive pitching options. AJ Preller did an excellent job assembling a deep pitching arsenal. And here in the playoffs, Preller’s work is paying dividends.

San Diego is walking away with a win and the series tied up. Furthermore, this means that Yu Darvish is now undefeated in 4 postseason road starts with the Padres. On Sunday against the Dodgers he went 7 innings, with 3 hits, 2BB, and 3K.

Nevertheless besides pitching, San Diego’s dominant performance was also due to very solid at bats. Out of the 10 runs put up on the scoreboard by the Padres, six of them were home runs. Tatis got the bloodbath going with a home run in the first inning and would add another later in the game. But, even San Diego’s rookie got in on the homer action.

At 21 years old, Jackson Merrill became the youngest Padres player to hit a home run in the postseason. Yes at just 21 years, 170 days to be exact, Merrill is the youngest player to homer in Padres postseason history. The rookie had himself a big game, going 3-for-4 with 3 RBI.

San Diego has now won 4 out of the last 5 postseason contests against the Dodgers. But now they get to bring the party to their turf and have the opportunity to finish this series in their house. In order to gain the chance to get back to the World Series for the first time since 1998. Can they do it? They certainly possess the talent, so be sure to tune into game 3 on Tuesday.
