Roberto Clemente is not just one of the greats of Major League Baseball; he is also a man of extraordinary character and class. An incredible individual who truly cared about his fellow man; from his teammates to complete strangers. Therefore, every September the sports world observes Roberto Clemente Day; in order to commemorate a man who truly gave it his all, on and off the field.
Hardworking. A family man. And a total MLB stud in terms of talent. Roberto is deserving of recognition and remembrance for numerous reasons.
Therefore, when exactly in September does Clemente Day fall on? It occurs right during the middle of the month, on September 15th.
This year on this wondrous occasion, the MLB released a statement that nicely explains why Clemente himself and his Day is so important to the game of baseball. The MLB states,
“Every September 15 we celebrate Roberto Clemente to honor an American hero revered by all and one of the greatest all around baseball players of all time. Roberto is one of the most decorated and respected players of his generation.
Roberto boasted a dazzling display of talent in the 1971 World Series and followed up by reaching 3,000 career hits on the final day of the 1972 season.
[Unfortunately] Roberto perished in a plane crash on December 31, 1972 while on a mercy mission to aid earthquake victims in Nicaragua. His widow Vera accepted his plaque at the 1973 Hall of Fame induction in Cooperstown.”
