Shocking Outcome In The Men’s 1500m Olympic Final

The absolute best athletes in this sport approached the start line. Yet somehow there was still a shocking outcome in the men’s 1500m Olympic final. It was a stacked field including giants like reigning world champion Josh Kerr of Great Britain and defending gold medalist Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway. And surprisingly there were three American men, Yared Nuguse, Cole Hocker, and Hobbs Kessler, an unusual occurrence.

However, the main draw of the race featured the long-standing rivalry between Ingebrigsten and Kerr. Both men brimmed with confidence and arrogance, each one certain that he would claim gold in this race. However, Cole Hocker had other plans.

“I kind of told myself that I’m in this race too,” Hocker said. “If they let me fly under the radar, then so be it. I think that might’ve just been the best.”

When the gun sounded Ingebrigtsen immediately exploded off the start line taking the lead and setting a pace. And it was a blazing fast pace which was kept up throughout the race. As the runners jockeyed for position, employing their strategies, the tension continued to ratchet up. Finally, going into the last lap Cole Hocker took the inside lane and blazed down the home stretch. It was jaw-dropping how he slipped past Ingebrigtsen and Kerr to win the gold. With a time of 3:27.65, Hocker set an Olympic record in the process.

His teammate, Yared Nuguse, dug deep to cross the finish line at 3:27.80 claiming the bronze. Kerr barely claimed  the silver at 3:27.79. And to complete the shocking finale, Ingebrigtsen finished in fourth place while Hobbs Kessler was right there with him finishing fifth. If you missed it, check out the ending of the race here.

Hocker shared his thoughts on claiming gold. “That’s an unbelievable feeling,” Hocker said. “I just felt like I was getting carried by the stadium and God. My body just kind of did it for me. My mind was all there and I saw that finish line.”

The last time two American men won medals in the 1500m was in 1912. This was the first time for Hocker and Nuguse to win Olympic medals. Overall it was a strong, excellent showing by the American men. This is a new era for the 1500m for the United States. Hocker, Nuguse, and Kessler are the future of the sport and it’s looking very bright, or golden if you will.
