Eli Manning Throws Out Yankees Ceremonial First Pitch Celebrating Giants 100th Season
Two New York sports teams crossed paths to commemorate ten decades of football lineage. How’d they do it? Well on August 4, former NFL quarterback Eli Manning threw out the Yankees ceremonial first pitch celebrating the Giants 100th season.
Turning a century is special. Not all establishments or organizations make it to such a historic mark. So then, the Giants certainly have some rich heritage to be proud of and respected.
Speaking of heritage, New York shared some facts about its storied past as well as successes. They state,
“The Giants were founded and played their first season in 1925. The Giants’ legal name is “The New York Football Giants” to distinguish them from the New York Giants baseball team, which played in New York from 1885-1957 before moving to San Francisco.
The Giants are still a family-owned organization. The original founder, Tim Mara, passed the team down to his sons, Jack and Wellington. Currently, John Mara (Wellington’s son) is the primary owner of the team, the third generation of his family to own the Giants.
One of the most-storied franchises in NFL history, the Giants have won eight total NFL championships; four in the pre-Super Bowl era, and four Super Bowl titles. [Furthermore] the Giants spoiled the New England Patriots’ bid for a perfect season when they defeated them in Super Bowl XLII. They beat the Patriots again four seasons later to win Super Bowl XLVI.
[Additionally], the Giants played in the 1958 NFL Championship game, losing in overtime to the Baltimore Colts, 23-17. The game was labeled “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” and is remembered for increasing the popularity of the NFL.”

Very nice historical overview, but what about that first pitch? On Sunday, Eli Manning stood near the dugout, waved his little hat and headed towards the mound. Eli wore his oh so familiar number ten Giants jersey; (Manning wore #10 for 16 seasons in New York; with it becoming one of just 12 retired jerseys in Giants history). At the sight of Eli, the crowd lets out a very sizable roar of applause. Manning smiled and finished jogging towards the hill.
Once there, Eli gives one final wave. Then immediately gets to the task at hand. Manning gets into pitching position then launches one to home plate. His pitch is a little high but at least in the right direction, where home plate is located. Yankees player Oswaldo Cabrera does the catching for the ceremonial first pitch.
Eli’s tossing is not only a nice dedication to the Giants’ legacy. But shows that Manning still has an arm. An arm that helped lead the New York franchise to two NFL Super Bowl championships and two Super Bowl MVP’s for Manning.
With the 2024 season right around the corner, maybe Manning’s first pitch will bring New York some good vibes. Last season, the Giants finished 6-11. But the team has been busy in the offseason to fix that.
Starting with a big trade for Linebacker Brian Burns. Nevertheless, the Giants also made several free agent signings to help improve the roster on both sides of the ball. The two time Pro Bowler’s sack total (Burns) is tied for 12th in the NFL since he entered the league while his 59 tackles for loss are tied for sixth-most in that span.
So then some improvements have been made. And it’s a new fresh season. The Giants can now get to work and start to write the story of their next 100 years.
