Injury Bug Has Shown Up For Training Camp

Training camp is good for easing the players back into football shape. Although it’s meant to be helpful to players sometimes it can cause unexpected damage in the form of injuries. And early on the injury bug has shown up for training camp. This is why some players choose not to practice if they haven’t received a new contract.

You hate to see it but there have already been some training camp casualties. The Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay confirmed that defensive back Derion Kendrick tore his ACL in Wednesday’s training camp practice. And he said Kendrick will probably get surgery to repair that injury in the next couple of weeks.

“I’m really proud of the way that he’s worked,” McVay said. “He’s continued to really mature in a lot of different ways. And if there’s one thing you know about this guy, he can handle setbacks. He’ll have a lot of support from his teammates and coaches, and he’ll attack the rehab.”

Another Rams player who suffered an injury is defensive back Darious Williams. Regarding Williams, McVay revealed on Saturday that Williams has a hamstring strain and that they will take things “a week at a time” with his return. Williams did not participate in Saturday’s practice appearing to hurt his hamstring on the last play of Thursday’s training camp practice.

“When you’re talking about those types of positions, it can be really tricky,” McVay said after Saturday’s practice. “We are definitely not going to rush him back.”

So for Kendrick his injury is unfortunately season ending. However, Williams is expected to play this season, it’s just a question of how soon it will be before he’s ready to play.

Another NFC team that has been bitten by the injury bug is the Detroit Lions. Head coach Dan Campbell confirmed on Friday morning, that kicker Michael Badgley suffered an injury on Thursday getting ready for practice. Campbell said the injury will require surgery and Badgley will be placed on injured reserve and miss the season.

“I feel awful for Badgley, man,” Campbell said. “He worked his tail off to get ready for this season and he was having a good spring and was ready for camp. It’s tough.”

The good news for Detroit is that they already have Jake Bates on their roster. Bates made a name for himself in the UFL this spring because of the big leg he displayed. Campbell said the team has already brought in some kickers to work out. But they aren’t in a hurry to sign one to compete with Bates unless it’s the right guy.
