Darrell Green's Jersey Retirement Will Happen Week 7

Darrell Green’s Jersey Retirement Will Happen Week 7

Earlier this year the Washington Commanders pulled off a big surprise for one of their best players ever. They let him know that his jersey would be retired much to his amazement and joy. And now the team has announced that Darrell Green’s jersey retirement will happen in Week 7 versus the Carolina Panthers in the upcoming season. The game will take place on October 20 with a scheduled kickoff time of 4:05 pm EDT and the retirement will take place at halftime.

Currently only Sonny Jurgensen (No. 9), Bobby Mitchell (No. 49), Sammy Baugh (No. 33) and Sean Taylor (No. 21) have their numbers retired. And Green will now join that distinguished company. The honor was well earned by Green over his 20 year NFL career from 1983 – 2002 playing in 295 games with 258 starts. Just playing for that long is impressive, but his stats are off the chart.

He is widely considered as one of the best cornerbacks to ever play the game. He was named to the 1990s All-Decade Team and the NFL’s 100th anniversary All-Time team. And he broke lots of team records:

  • most career interceptions (54)
  • most game starts (258)
  • most games played (295)
  • most consecutive seasons (20)
  • longest fumble returned for a touchdown (78 yards)
  • most interceptions returned for touchdown (6)
  • most consecutive seasons with an interception (19)

Looking at those records proves that he was durable, consistent and very productive. Another fun fact about Green is that he was a four-time winner of the NFL’s Fastest Man Competition — a perfect record — and the only player to win multiple times.

Congratulations to Green on this tremendous honor. We hope he enjoys this very special day.

In other Washington Commanders news, Charlie Casserly has been named as one of the inductees into the DC Sports Hall of Fame. Casserly’s NFL career spanned almost three decades, most of which he spent with Washington in various roles. As general manager, he played a significant role in crafting Washington’s rosters and acquiring some of their greatest players. He also helped to build all three of Washington’s Super Bowl-winning teams. Therefore, because of his contributions to professional sports in the DC area he is being honored.
