Receiver by Peyton Manning Debuted at Number One on Netflix; Despite Looming Casting Woes

It is always a good sign to be number one. It means there’s support and interest. And fortunately for a former Hall of Fame quarterback; his latest television project hit this particular milestone. Receiver by Peyton Manning debuted at number one on Netflix and stayed there for several days. Following in the footsteps of Manning’s other successful docu-series, Quarterback.

Netflix and Forbes confirmed the show’s landing in the top spot. Forbes mentioned, “Well, it’s not Quarterbacks or F1: Drive to Survive, but Receiver, the NFL documentary about receivers in the league, did reach #1 on Netflix’s top 10 list for a few days.”

Nonetheless, what is drawing audiences in to watch Receiver? Well gaining unprecedented access into the careers of various sports figures still appeals to many. Thus, Receiver follows the moments surrounding Davante Adams, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, Justin Jefferson and Amon-Ra St. Brown. As Manning explained,

“They say there’s not a more difficult position in sports than NFL quarterback,” legendary quarterback Peyton Manning says in the first moments of Receiver. “But the truth is, throwing a pass is only half the story. With all due respect to offensive linemen, the quarterback’s best friend is this guy: the receiver.

As we did with Quarterback, we look forward to telling the stories of five incredible receivers, each with their unique personality, skill set, and motivation for what drives them to be the best.”

So then, what seems to be the problem? Everything seems to be going quite swimmingly. Well, there’s a bit of a casting issue evolving behind the scenes.

Manning has already revealed his struggles to get players to sign on to being a part of Quarterback season 2. Peyton had discussed the problem months ago with the Hollywood Reporter stating,

“To use a cheesy analogy, we’re definitely in the two-minute drill here. I’d love for someone to call us back and say, ‘I want to do it.’ I had three starting quarterbacks tell me no yesterday, so I’m swallowing my pride.”

What about now? Have things improved? They have… a smidge.

At least now we know there will definitely be a Season 2 in 2024. The project has officially been green-lighted. Peyton confirmed the news last week on the Pat McAfee show. He says,

“Season two has been greenlit by Netflix. We’re excited. We’re hoping [for] more quarterbacks. It’s easier to say yes. I don’t want to hear it’s going to be a distraction, because that’s not true. Patrick Mahomes proved that, right? Kirk Cousins proved that. Marcus [Mariota], the way he handled that, he proved that, right?”

Yes, some guys can handle the extra pressure and bright lights. Other guys don’t want them. Therefore, there still seems to be some persuasion going on to get guys to join in the project. With it proving this difficult to get quarterbacks, could getting another set of wide receivers also prove to be a tough challenge? It definitely could. But, if anyone can get the job done it’s Peyton Manning.

He gets many stars and athletes to be guests on his Manningcast. Also, now he has multiple hit Netflix series under his belt. Major connections. And oh yeah, the man knows how to win. So then, we should just let Peyton cook. Let him iron out the minutiae and keep entertaining us with endless sports content.
