FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023
Move over fellas, the ladies are in the house! It’s time for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 and they are ready to play. The quadrennial tournament is set to begin on July 20, 2023 and culminate with the final on August 20. The opening match will be between New Zealand and Norway. There are 32 teams from around the world ready to compete in what is sure to be their biggest tournament yet.
There are some records that could be broken this year. “The King” the late, great Pele himself is the only player to win three World Cups. Julie Ertz, Alex Morgan, Alyssa Naeher, Kelley O’Hara and Megan Rapinoe – reigning champions at World Cup Canada 2015 and World Cup France 2019 – hope to match his record in 2023. In addition, Morgan and Rapinoe could become the first players to appear in four World Cup finals. That’s quite an achievement.
Furthermore, no player has surpassed Lionel Messi’s 19 appearances as captain at the World Cup. But Sun Wen and Christine Sinclair are gaining on him with 16 and 15 appearances respectively as captains. And if you like scoring keep your eye on team Norway. They have scored in 15 successive Women’s World Cup games between 1991 and 1999.

I want to give a shout out to coach Desiree Ellis of South Africa. She is a pioneer in the sport having been one of the first to be on the national team. It wasn’t until Nelson Mandela was released from prison that she had the opportunity to play on the national team. Because of apartheid they had been denied the opportunity to play. As a coach, she seeks now to help others to also take advantage of opportunities in the sport. No doubt, she will use all of her considerable skill and experience to bring home the Cup to South Africa.
I know some of you may be thinking, “Who cares about women’s futbol?” But don’t let their gender fool you. These athletes are fierce, highly trained competitors. Don’t believe me? Check out the video, “All Roads Lead Down Under” and then we can talk. Show your support by watching the tournament. I’m certain the level of action and entertainment is going to blow your mind.
