Tommy Paul Defeats Sebastian Korda in the Queen’s Club Championship

Everyone twirl a tennis racket in this man’s honor! He has done it. He is a finalist. Tommy Paul defeats Sebastian Korda in the Queen’s Club Championship knocking out his own countryman from competition.

Paul was able to get a little payback and retribution after Sebastian Korda eliminated him in a 2-0 win in the Libema Open Tournament just last week on June 14. Therefore, this is a pairing very familiar with each other’s game. And makes for an entertaining battle. Any time they meet up. Nevertheless, Tommy Paul’s breakout season continues apace at Queen’s Club; as the man who has trudged past Korda; while dashing the hopes of Jack Draper, and is now advancing to the final.

However, Tommy Paul is making some pertinent history too when it comes to advancing to the Queen’s Club final. He’s the first American to do so since the All-American final in 2010 between Sam Querrey and Mardy Fish. Therefore, the 14 year drought is finally coming to an end.

But how did the matchup go down in the Korda/Paul semifinal? Well, American No. 2 Paul defeats compatriot Korda 6-4 7-6 to reach his sixth ATP Tour final. Paul looked good coming right out of the gate. Taking the opener 6-4. Korda did his very best in order to keep things fairly close, but Sebastian ended up coming up short.

So who is next for Tommy Paul to face? Paul will challenge Lorenzo Musetti in the final round in London. Which will be TP’s sixth career final; the third of the year and the second on grass after the one lost against Cerundolo last year in Eastbourne.

This will also be the first ever meeting between Musetti and Paul. And it should be an intense bout. Both athletes are chasing their first title on grass.

Plus, there is another incentive for Tommy at stake. If Paul wins he will be the No. 1 American in rankings for the first time, passing his old friend Taylor Fritz.

Nevertheless, it is usually after competition that an athlete is able to fully grasp the moment and also reflect on performance. What went well, what didn’t; and if there is that can be improved before the next matchup. So then, how does Tommy feel about his playing in the semifinal? Tommy Paul after beating Korda to reach 2nd grass final in Queens mentions:

“I’m happy with how I’m playing. I feel like every time I step on grass I learn something and I’m getting better. Hopefully tomorrow will be a little better.”
