San Diego Padres Sweep Oakland A’s and Jackson Merrill Makes History!

There’s been some rookie of the year discussions so far this season. However, one name keeps being overlooked and barely mentioned. Yet, with his most recent performance on the field and at the plate; he’s making a strong case to no longer be ignored in the ROTY conversation. The San Diego Padres sweep the Oakland A’s and Jackson Merrill makes history as a rookie in the MLB!

This series between SD and Oakland is a crazy rollercoaster. Very tight games between the two ball clubs. With Oakland jumping out to a lead, Padres coming back and two games being tied and decided in the 9th inning.

Furthermore, two games are won by a walk off home run. Catcher Kyle “Higgy” Higashioka wins game 2 with a homer to left field. And now Jackson Merrill wins the final game of the series and gets the sweep for the friar faithful with a barrel blast to right field. The Padres celebrate to cheers from a packed out crowd, winning 5-4.

Yet, back to back homers is not the only wild thing to occur this series. Several things surrounding Merrill is now going into the baseball history books. They include:

According to Sarah Langs and Major League Baseball

  • At 21 years and 54 days old; Jackson Merrill is the youngest player with a multi-home run game including a walk off homerun in at least the divisional era (1969).
  • It’s the second time the Padres have hit walk-off homers on back-to-back days. The first? Marvell Wynn’s and Bruce Bochy in April 1986.
  • Jackson Merrill is the youngest player in Padres history with a walk-off home run.

Amazing. Merrill is definitely on a tear this season. Even despite starting in center field, a new position for him; being that he is a former shortstop. Nevertheless, as a quick study he is a very effective CF for the Padres this season. And is also getting it done; on both sides of the ball. Swinging a mean bat in the process.

Funny thing is… Jackson doesn’t even remember this now historic moment. Call it adrenaline. Call it excitement. But, Merrill was just trying to help his team, not just settle for winning another series; but sweep it. Jackson states,

“We’d already won the series. But that wasn’t enough. I don’t even remember me swinging. It was just one of those blackout moments. You do it, and it just feels really surreal.”

Well, that’s what replay is for Jackson. And you’ll be able to watch this awesome home run over and over. Plus, we are sure this is only the beginning of what MLB fans are going to get to witness from Merrill throughout his budding career. Therefore, let the good times roll.
