Timberwolves Force a Game 7 Defeating Nuggets 70-115; Largest Win Over Defending Champion

If the NBA playoffs Game 6 between Minnesota and Denver seemed like something you have never seen before. It is because you haven’t. The reigning champs made history last year by winning the franchise’s first championship; and they once again find themselves in the books, over 45 points between them and their opponents. In a major twist, the Timberwolves force a game 7 by defeating the Denver Nuggets 70-115.

No that is not an error. The Nuggets lost by 45 points. In a series in which they lead 3-2 going into Thursday night’s game. It is like Minnesota showed up with an UNO reverse card after Denver had won the last three games. Statmuse had this to say about the win/ loss,

“Tonight’s 115-70 win by the Timberwolves is the largest playoff win in franchise history. It’s also the largest playoff loss in Denver Nuggets history.”

Furthermore, the Wolves defeating the Nuggets is also the largest win over a defending champion in NBA playoff history. OptaStats confirms the intel. They state,

“The Timberwolves beat the Nuggets by 45 points. No team had ever beaten the defending NBA champs by more than 36 points in the playoffs before tonight.”

As one can see, a blowout is not usually what you’re thinking in a close out elimination game or what you’re expecting in the playoffs period. It’s usually two teams in a hardcore battle. Yes, teams do lose, but the margin is usually not so significant.

However, Anthony Edwards was an absolute force on the court for the Timberwolves. Putting up 27 points. And thus helping his team survive to see another day and another game.

Nevertheless, this loss doesn’t mean anyone needs to count the defending champs out come Sunday. After such a tough game; most champions will want to come out swinging. Therefore, Game 7 is definitely going to be GOOD. And if Denver does prevail they will still get to make a little history of their own.

There have only been five teams in the history of the NBA that have done what the Nuggets are trying to do right now in the Western Conference Semifinals: win a 7-game playoff series where they lost the first two games on their home court. Becoming the sixth team to do something super rare; would still be pretty cool. And only add to the growing legend that is Nikola Jovíc.

Nevertheless, they will have to get past a fired up Minnesota. A team that is ready to sink their fangs in and finish the job to move on. Seriously, May 19 can’t get here fast enough. We can’t wait to see these two teams go at it. May the best team win!
