Padres Starting Pitchers Achieve Something Not Seen Since 1893
Some of us may never see what generations are up to 60 years into the future. Or in about 100 years from now. Well, the Friar Faithful got to witness something not seen in over 130 years. The Padres starting pitchers achieved something not seen since 1893.
1893???! Yep. And BTW this is a pretty significant year in American history. A lot happened. Here are just a few things for your historic enjoyment:
- Chicago World’s Fair aka “the fair that changed America”: An event introducing more than 27 million people to an abundance of modern marvels like elevators (praise Him), the zipper (hallelujah), Cracker Jacks (thank god), the Ferris wheel (amen), and the first voice recording.
- Also, the first United States commemorative postage stamps (and coins) are issued
- A crash on the New York Stock Exchange starts a depression.
Wild. However, America’s pastime was also electric. Which is what we’ll briefly discuss. So what happened now, that also occurred then? MLB.com via AJ Cassavell reported on an insane occurrence,
“Including the outing from right-hander Dylan Cease against the Chicago Cubs on May 8 and the Padres’ starters this past weekend, the team became the first squad since 1893 to have four straight starts of at least five innings while allowing two or fewer hits. Cease started it for San Diego, Micheal King did his part on May 10, Matt Waldron on May 11, and Yu Darvish on May 12.”
For the last couple of games, San Diego fans could feel something special in the air brewing. Getting the chance to appreciate the talent of an under contract Yu Darvish, and guys gotten through trades: Waldron, Cease and King. All of these athletes are getting the job done and then some with their lights out performances during their pitching outings. And what’s also of note is this success is not just happening against just anyone. But really good teams.
Padres Starting Pitchers Achieve Something Not Seen Since 1893
Marty Caswell even highlighted this thought after the recent Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres Series. Caswell states,
“The 133,970 fans that jammed Petco this weekend, yes even Dodgers fans, saw some brilliant Padres starting pitching against the best offense in baseball. Michael King, Matt Waldron and 7 shutout by Yu Darvish today gave up 2 runs in 19.1 IP. Padres win a 2nd straight series vs. Los Angeles Dodgers.”
Nice. Moreover, the Padres also set an attendance record during this division rival series. On Saturday, 46,701 individuals packed the house. This is really no surprise since every game against these two teams have been competitive and fiercely entertaining. Even while underperforming last season, the Padres sold out a franchise-record 58 games in 2023. Their overall home attendance average last year was 40,371; putting them third in the Majors, behind only the Dodgers and Yankees.
Plus, when you have a team like the Padres on the right side of the win column; of course, butts will be in seats and eyes glued to the TV. Therefore, congratulations to the efforts of AJ Preller and the Padres starting rotation for giving and providing us with some FIRE baseball.
