Checks are clearing for a hardworking defensive back, as the Tampa Buccaneers and Antoine Winfield Jr agree to 4-Year 84.1 Million deal making him the highest paid Safety in NFL history.
Therefore, congratulations are in fact in order for Winfield. It is always nice to see guys get paid for their efforts on the field. Especially, one who has been as effective and dominant as Antoine.
We mean come on, can you expect a different outcome when during the 2023-2024 season; a guy records 122 tackles, 6 sacks, 6 forced fumbles and 3 INTs? Hardly. So then, this is a contract that you could probably see coming from a mile away.

Nonetheless, the Bucs were quick to happily announce the news this week to fans. And sports reporter Adam Schefter also confirms the contract along with negotiation details. He states,
“Antoine Winfield Jr. is now the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history after he and the Bucs reached agreement on a 4-year, $84.1M deal, per sources. It’s the first time in modern NFL history that a safety has set this mark. Deal negotiated and confirmed by David Mulugheta of Athletes First.”
Nice. Both parties also wanted this deal. Neither Winfield or the Bucs wish to depart from each other. Became pretty clear when they placed a franchise tag on Antoine back in March.
Moreover, Tampa Bay’s GM actually discussed this situation recently. Providing an update on the progression of deal. Furthermore, Yahoo Sports not only mentioned the significance of this signing but what GM Jason Licht had to say about an agreement being reached. They reveal,
“[Antoine’s] $21.025 million annual salary makes him the NFL’s highest-paid defensive back, topping the $21 million per year that Jaire Alexander received from the Green Bay Packers with his contract in 2022. Winfield’s deal is also notable in that he plays safety. The league’s six highest-paid defensive backs — including Denzel Ward, Jalen Ramsey, Marlon Humphrey, Marshon Lattimore and Trevon Diggs — were all previously cornerbacks, according to Over the Cap. Derwin James Jr. was the NFL’s top-paid safety until Winfield’s deal with the Bucs.
‘It takes two sides and they’re being totally fair, we think we’re being fair,’ Licht said on The Pat McAfee Show. ‘He wants to be here, we want him, those things usually work themselves out and I’m fairly positive about where things are going with that. … He’s the best safety in the league; he should be paid like it.’”
