Senior VP Of Officiating Walt Anderson Is Stepping Aside

He’s had a long career in officiating football. And he’s not quite finished yet. However, as of yesterday, it was reported that the Senior VP of Officiating, Walt Anderson is stepping aside. As reported by Football Zebras, this information came from at least five officiating sources with knowledge of the situation. His expected end date is May 1, but speculation suggested he will remain in the officiating department overseeing replay operations. Nevertheless, the NFL has just begun the process of hiring a replacement for the executive position.

This may be a tough role to fill because officiating insiders say, “this is the job nobody wants.” It has had somewhat of a revolving door issue in the past few years. Mike Pereira was the last person to hold the position for 9 years and prior to him Jerry Seeman held it for 10 years. Of course Art McNally was the grandfather of the job, holding it from 1968 to 1990. However, since Pereira no one has remained the head of the department for more than 4 years.

Despite the high turnover of late there are some potential candidates to fill the position. Football Zebras put forth the following:

Referee Bill Vinovich just came off what could be considered the best officiated Super Bowl to date. And it is the third one he presided over. Vinovich, 63, worked in the league office as an officiating supervisor and grader.

Side judge Eugene Hall is actually on the record as someone who would consider the job. If there is an ideal candidate who could finally provide leadership stability for more than a decade and beyond, the 46-year-old Hall seems to be it.

Today the NFL announced five new officials for the 2024 season. One of them is Derek Anderson, Walt’s son, who will be a Line of Scrimmage (LOS) official. Walt Anderson said in a statement:

“With Derek’s promotion, I expect to begin the process of transitioning to a new role as an NFL Rules Analyst & Club Communications Liaison. Where I will focus on communicating with the clubs during the week and with our broadcast partners on gamedays. While I will no longer be making officiating decisions. Together with a variety of stakeholders I will continue to look for new and better ways to promote excellence in officiating performance. I welcome this challenge and look forward to the opportunity to support the men and women. Who do such a tremendous job officiating our game at every level.”

Best wishes to the Anderson family and the new officials.
