Yankees Gerrit Cole Nerve Inflammation and Edema Update

Yankees Gerrit Cole Nerve Inflammation and Edema Update

Being just days from the start of the 2024 season, injury news is not what any fans want to hear about; or what any franchise wishes to deal with and navigate through. Yet, that’s what some ball clubs are currently facing. One being the boys in stripes on the east coast. Regarding the historic New York team, the Yankees Gerrit Cole nerve inflammation and edema update seems to at least be mostly positive.

Bryan Hoch, a Yankee beat writer for MLB.com, gives a quick overview of the state of Cole’s treatment as well as current recovery options. Hoch reveals,

“Gerrit Cole said that he is dealing with nerve inflammation and edema. ‘Three to four weeks no throw, and we’ll go from there.’

‘I think we determined that we just got a little too hot a little too quick this spring.’

Gerrit Cole said he is not scheduled to get any PRP injections. ‘Just rest and recovery.’ Will keep his arm live with plyo exercises, etc. until he can resume throwing. Said it is too soon to look at the calendar and circle a return date.”

Furthermore, Max Goodman who covers Yankee news for NJ Advance Media also has been making his rounds and was kind enough to share additional intel about the Yankees and Coles’ approach to staying competitive and not allowing any setbacks to deter forward momentum. Goodman states,

“Nothing new from Aaron Boone on Gerrit Cole, just that the Yankees are coming to terms with him not being ready for Opening Day. They’ve discussed who will start in his place. There won’t be enough time for him to ramp up for Opening Day.

All things considered, the Yankees got good news on Gerrit Cole today. The ace will miss time — reportedly 1-2 months — but the alternative was disastrous.

Here’s what NY’s rotation now looks like to begin the year:

Stroman
Rodón
Cortes
Schmidt
Weaver/Poteet/Warren/Beeter/Gil

Gerrit Cole reveals that he won’t throw for the next three to four weeks due to nerve inflammation and edema in his right elbow.

He won’t completely shut down, continuing to ‘keep the arm live.’ Then, he’ll hit the ground running with a build up from there.”

Of course, the “build up” will take some time as well. Therefore, a couple of months could turn into a few. However, with surgery being off the table this is still a more favorable outcome for the Yankees.
