Sources Believe Robert Seidler Will Assume Full-Time Control of Padres
It’s been a tough few months for San Diego. Juan Soto to the Yankees. Two time Cy Young winner, Blake Snell and top closer, Josh Hader, both gone in free agency. The introduction of a lower payroll, higher ticket prices, youth roster movement; still no TV deal, rumors of Ha-Seong Kim trade; and of course, the toughest part of all, the loss of franchise owner, Peter Seidler. However, some stability and the wave of a fresh new era may be on the horizon. Sources believe Robert Seidler will assume full-time control of the Padres; Robert is one of Peter’s nine siblings.
Nonetheless, this move makes sense, because before his passing; Peter made it clear it was his wish and desire for the Padres ball club to stay in his family’s possession. Moreover, it was also desire for the team to remain competitive for the foreseeable future. For instance, at the CAA World Congress of Sports in 2023, former Padres Chair Peter Seidler talked with SBJ Head of Sports Technology’s Taylor Bloom. He tells Bloom,
“Don’t use the word ‘small market’ in our building. The Padres have had a couple of fire sales in their past. There will never be another fire sale in San Diego, and I expect my family to own the franchise for 50, 75 more years, and then we’ll figure out what to do. Hopefully go for more. I’ll be talking from the grave.
Our view is always very long term. We want to be a franchise that 20 years (later) looks back and says, ‘Man, that’s been stable. It’s been excellent. Hasn’t won every year, but the team always had a fair shot and more often than not, did win.’ … Fans don’t ask me about financials. They want to know about players. And that’s our primary focus, is good financials follow good players.”

Since Peter’s sudden passing, Eric Kutsenda has been serving as an interim chairman for the San Diego organization. Kutsenda, is a co-founder and managing partner at Peter Seidler’s private equity firm. Eric has addressed the media and fans just once during his tenure.
However, the franchise may just be changing hands yet again in the near future. According to Dennis Lin of The Athletic; Robert Seidler could possibly get the nod. Lin reports,
“Multiple league sources have said they expect Robert Seidler, one of Peter Seidler’s nine siblings, will assume full-time control of the franchise, but no decision has been made official as the Seidler family continues to sort through its long-term plans.”
And there’s been plenty to sort through this offseason. From payroll, resetting taxes, to fielding a competitive team. Nevertheless, the Padres and their fans are weathering the storm. San Diego will kick off the 2024 season in just one month against the LA Dodgers in Seoul, Korea. It will be an exciting series and it will be riveting to see who assumes control and how they follow in the steps of the great Peter Seidler.
