Roger Goodell Held Annual Super Bowl Press Conference

Roger Goodell Held Annual Super Bowl Press Conference

It has become a Super Bowl tradition and this year was no different. Commissioner Roger Goodell held his annual Super Bowl Press conference where he entertains questions from the media. But this year had a twist to the proceedings. The event was held on yesterday, on a Monday instead of later in the week. Therefore, many journalists had not yet arrived in Las Vegas to attend. In addition, the event was by invitation only so only a select few reporters were in attendance.

These changes to the press conference did not sit well with many members of the press. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk confirmed that he was not invited to the event. Further, Michael Hurley of WBZ.com Sports had an opinion about the event. He wrote, “Goodell is seemingly opening himself up to criticism for dodging questions that he’d otherwise be facing this week. If he held his “press conference” later in the week and didn’t restrict who was allowed to participate.”

Hurley also included this quote in his article from long-time journalist Peter King:

“I think the whole thing is a bad look for Goodell. Very bad,” wrote Peter King, a veteran reporter who’s not normally quick to criticize the commissioner. “Either he’s got thinner skin than he likes people to think he has, or he’s afraid of answering tough questions about how far the league’s gotten into bed with sports betting interest after saying for years legalized sports gambling would be a pox on the NFL.”

And speaking of answering questions, Goodell was not very specific in his responses, as usual. When asked about older coaches not getting head coaching jobs such as Belichick and Carroll he was evasive. He only said that some older coaches had reached out to him asking to be mentors and wanting to mentor the younger coaches. Whether the older coaches were being deliberately excluded from jobs was not addressed.

His response about NFL officiating was equally non-committal. He said that officiating was under more scrutiny than ever; but believes the officials are doing a great job. Nothing was said about how to improve the officiating. So although Goodell holds these press conferences, not much information is ever forthcoming. Maybe it was a good thing lots of reports were not in attendance. They could probably find other things to do in Las Vegas.
