Raiders Gifted the Chiefs A Big Loss on Christmas

The Raiders and Chiefs rivalry has been a classic since the 1960’s. And yet the Raiders gifted the Chiefs a big loss on Christmas. Both defenses came out firing on all cylinders and both offenses went three and out on their first drives. The Raiders defense forced another three and out for the Chiefs. It was the first time Mahomes had two consecutive three and outs at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Raiders put together a nice drive on their second possession. But they stalled in the red zone with plays that lost yards and kicked a field goal. Next the Chiefs picked up their first first down but ended up punting the ball. Their offensive line was being manhandled by the Raiders defense. But on their next possession the offensive line played  better and the Chiefs scored a touchdown.

And then a crazy thing happened. The Raiders defense scored two touchdowns in seven seconds! On a mishandled fake hand-off the Chiefs fumbled the ball. The Raiders recovered and ran the ball into the end zone but missed the extra point.

Then the Chiefs got the ball again and Mahomes was immediately intercepted. Jack Jones ran it back 33 yards for the second touchdown. And they converted the two-point conversion to make the score 17-7. The Chiefs had one more possession and kicked a field goal which was missed. And that’s how the first half ended.

The Raiders went three and out to open the third quarter. Offensively they hadn’t done much, the defense kept them in the game. The Chiefs then went on a long drive and converted a 4th & 1 but couldn’t do it again on 4th & 5. Las Vegas took over on their 43 yard line. But they failed again to pick up a first down.

Later they had great field position at the KC 45 yard line. They got a field goal but Aidan O’Connell didn’t complete any of his passes. Early in the 4th quarter the Raiders intercepted Mahomes but it was overturned. They got to the Raiders 7 yard line and turned it over on downs.

Th Chiefs scored another touchdown late in the 4th quarter. With 2:42 on the clock the Raiders let their run game do the heavy lifting. Zamir White had runs of 15, 43, and 6 yards. That ran the clock down and they knelt on the ball and ended the game.

It’s an understatement to say the Raiders defense won this game. Even Tony Romo admitted the Raiders defense was so disciplined. The Chiefs struggled on offense and never got into a real rhythm. Next game up is New York Giants @ Philadelphia Eagles.
