It is the $700 million contract heard around the world. Also, the most lucrative Major League Baseball deal to ever get handed out. Therefore, with that kind of money being on the table; you would think the last thing any team gaining the best player in baseball would want is an option to leave. Therefore, here is the question… is there a possibility that Shohei Ohtani can opt of Dodgers deal?
The short answer is… well, yes. However, there are stipulations of course. The guy cannot just walk away cold turkey from Los Angeles for no good reason.
For the most part, Ohtani’s contract is pretty shut tight. It includes no “regular” opt-outs. Therefore, he is a LA guy for the rest of his playing days.
Unless… there’s some big changes in the front office. No team likes organizational changes. Especially, the players themselves.
At times, regime switches can lead to instability and new staffing. Causing some players to go from feeling comfortable to uncomfortable with the new situation. The Associated Press were the first to confirm through sources concerning a possible Ohtani opt out. USA Today’s, Bob Nightengale even reminds us all of the name of such an contract option; he reveals,
“Shohei Ohtani can opt out of his $700 million contract with the Dodgers if Mark Walter is no longer the controlling owner or Andrew Friedman leaves the Dodgers, as the Associated Press 1st reported.
It’s called a Key Man clause, used by Joe Maddon when he left the Rays in 2014.”
Furthermore, ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez also solidifies this new revelation. He states,
“Can confirm, though an industry source, what The Associated Press reported:
Shohei Ohtani’s contract includes a provision that if owner Mark Walter or president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman are no longer with the Dodgers, he can opt out at that season’s conclusion.”
