49ers Suspending De’Vondre Campbell For Three Games

Things definitely went south after he refused to enter the game. Dre Greenlaw had gone down with an injury and he was expected to step in but didn’t. As a result the San Francisco 49ers are suspending De’Vondre Campbell for three games. After the 12-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, head coach Kyle Shanahan had said:

“We’re working through the semantics of exactly how to deal with it,” Shanahan said. “But you guys heard from me last night, you guys heard from our players. His actions from the game is just not something you can do to your team or your teammates and still expect to be a part of our team. So we’re working through exactly the semantics of it right now, but we’ll handle the situation appropriately.”

And to get clarification a follow up question was asked to confirm he didn’t expect Campbell to be with the club in Week 16 and beyond. “No, I don’t,” the coach responded. And now the announcement about the suspension is a sure indicator that the team is moving on from Campbell.

Campbell signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Niners in the offseason. He was to be a bridge while Greenlaw rehabbed from a Super Bowl Achilles tear. Once Greenlaw returned to the lineup in Week 15, Campbell lost the starting job. Therefore, it didn’t make sense for Campbell to be upset that his reps had diminished. But apparently that was his reason for not entering the game against the Rams.

Campbell didn’t do himself any favors by refusing to play. By suspending Campbell for the final three regular-season games, San Francisco avoids having to waive him, which would allow the linebacker to land with another team. The Niners also avoid paying him for the final three games.

His teammates were not happy with his actions either. Tight end George Kittle said:
“I’m a leader on the team, and if that is something that is being a distraction on the sideline, I would’ve loved to voice my own opinion in the moment,” Kittle said. “And we’re past that moment. So, it doesn’t matter what I wish I could have said or wish I could have done, but I don’t like distractions on the sideline. I think that’s ignorant. And I think it’s just dumb. It’s just stupid, and it’s very immature. I just don’t see how you could do something like that to your team.”
Charvarius Ward added: “He’s a professional he’s been playing for a long time. If he didn’t want to play, he shouldn’t have dressed out. He could have told them that before the game.”
