49ers Handled the Giants In Thursday Night Showdown

Well that was a good showing for the 49ers. We’ll talk about how the 49ers handled the Giants in the Thursday night showdown. But before we get to that I failed to mention the punter for the Pittsburgh Steelers. This past Monday he nailed a fantastic punt reminiscent of Ray Guy’s coffin corner kicks. Pinning the Browns to about the 2 yard line, Pressley Harvin III was pumped and jacked with the result. And rightfully so; as he urged his teammates to go full throttle. I look forward to seeing more from him this season.

Now onto the game that was Thursday Night Football this week. Both teams started well, marching down the field and scoring field goals on their opening drives. Brock Purdy threw some shaky passes that could have been interceptions had his receivers not batted them down. But Purdy settled down and began making some good throws. The receivers did their part by getting big yards after the catch. And yes Christian McCaffrey is a beast. He took different Giants for a ride as he barreled down the field for big chunk yardage.

The Giants QB, Daniel Jones, also had some less than great throws and eventually he was intercepted in the fourth quarter. He wasn’t able to run either as he had done in the first two games of the season. Overall the Giants weren’t able to generate much offense at all. On 46 offensive plays they only gained 150 yards. Not the outcome they were
hoping for I’m sure. But to be fair, the Giants were without their star running back Saquon Barkley. He suffered an ankle injury in the week 2 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. It’s not known how long he will be out but the Giants will need someone to step up.

We do need to mention the punch 49ers Left Tackle Trent Williams bestowed upon defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson. It happened just before the end of the second quarter. They got into a shoving match and Williams hit Robinson in the facemask. A penalty flag was thrown.

Usually striking a player in the facemask would be cause for ejection from a game. But that didn’t happen to Williams. Pool reporter, Matt Barrows, received an explanation from NFL Sr. VP of Officiating Walt Anderson. “We ended up looking at the video we had available to us, and we just didn’t see anything that rose to the level of flagrant,
which is the standard that we have to apply to disqualify the player,” Anderson said. Sounds wishy-washy to me. Williams will probably be fined for the penalty. We’ll see what happens when the next player throws a punch.
