20th Anniversary of NFL Network
On November 4, 2023 NFL fans celebrated the 20th anniversary of the NFL Network. Like NBA TV before them, the NFL launched their own cable network. There had never been a television channel quite like it, dedicated to 24/7 coverage of a sport available to fans, reporters, and the simply curious.
Rich Eisen left his premier position at ESPN to anchor the fledgling network. And he hasn’t looked back. In an interview with AP Eisen stated, “It’s amazing that 20 years ago was the beginning of the advent of a network that changed the lives of so many fans. I truly believe that,” Eisen said. “And then a day later is one of the biggest games we’ve ever had, which is obviously what all of us dreamed about that this network would be when we started it.”
Reflecting on some of the things the network accomplished he went on to say, “These are all things that I am proud to have been a part of and watch develop based on the maturation of NFL Network. It has grown into a heck of a lot more that is a major source of pride,” Eisen said.
And what are those accomplishments? Well, the NFL schedule release has become a prime-time event. A great deal of hype now surrounds the NFL Draft which has become a three day ratings bonanza. And it has made Thursday night football popular. Originally, critics believed that fans would not be interested in watching football games on a Thursday. Apparently, the critics were wrong because Amazon pays $1 billion per season for the privilege to air the games.
20th Anniversary of NFL Network
When the network aired they trotted out the biggest names in the league to do interviews and generate buzz. Jerry Jones, Peyton Manning, Terrell Owens, Steve McNair, and even actor and Bears fan Jim Belushi to name a few. They even interviewed Hall of Famers such as Howie Long and Terry Bradshaw.
