2025 MLB All Star Game—National League Wins After Extras Home-Run Swing-Off!

The 2025 MLB All-Star Game was a thrilling showdown! The American League and National League went head-to-head for the 95th edition of the Midsummer Classic at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia.

Who were this year’s starting pitchers? Well, for the second straight year, Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes hit the mound starting for the National League. While the Detroit Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal got the start for the American League. So let’s get into the action!

Pirate Paul Skenes got the pitching duties started for the National League. It was an easy 1-2-3 out inning for Paul. As he retired two consecutive Detroit Lions and the Yankees Aaron Judge. Skenes was impressive as usual in the top of the inning, even registering a 100.3 mph strikeout pitch to Riley Greene. The fastest by a ASG starting pitcher in the pitch tracking era (since 2008).

For the AL, Tarik Skubal had a little trouble on mound as his first three batters: Ohtani, Acuna; and Marte all got hits to immediately go up with a NL 2-0 lead in the first. But Skubal got some revenge by getting Freddie Freeman to chop one to SS for out number one and Manny Machado as well as catcher Will Smith to strikeout.

The Dodgers Clayton Kershaw came in to begin the top of the second. He retired two batters, flashed that smile we all love; then headed to the dugout. There’s only three pitchers who have been to more All-Star Games than Kershaw. So then, this was a very nice moment for Mr. 3,000 strikeouts.

Yankees’ hurler Carlos Rodon came in the bottom of the second and was electric. Striking out the Cubs Kyle Tucker and the Mets Francisco Lindor. However, Pete Crow-Armstrong got the better of him getting a double. But Rodon was able to get Shohei Ohtani to groundout towards first base and successfully got out the inning without any additional NL scoring.

The Cubs’ PCA added to his aura after his double by making a sick play for the first out of the top of the third. PCA and Kyle Tucker ran down the ball for out number two. And San Francisco Giants’ pitcher Logan Webb snagged out number three thanks to causing a groundout to first.

Bottom of the third flew by faster than Superman. And that was thanks to the pitching of Seattle Mariners’ Bryan Woo who had himself a 1-2-3 inning. Retiring three batters in around 10 pitches. Amazing.

In the fourth some excitement for the American League was created. Big Dumper got himself a single (which would have been double if not for a perfect strike by Tatis Jr. to second base). In time Cal made his way on to third. But he would be stranded. The NL would remain up, 2-0.

Bottom of the sixth… we had ACTION. The Padres Fernando Tatis Jr. got a walk. Then effortlessly stole to second base. The Cardinals Brendan Donovan singles then the Mets Pete Alonso BURST the game open! Alonso blasted a 367 feet home run putting the National League up 5-0. He’s the first Met to hit a home run in the ASG in years. According to Linus Lawrence,

“Pete Alonso of the New York Mets became [just] the third Met to hit a home run in the All-Star Game. The other two Mets to achieve this feat are Lee Mazzilli (1979) and David Wright (2006).”

But the NL WAS NOT DONE. The Diamondbacks little man who swings a big bat, Pete Carroll hit a home run of his own. It went 414 feet, flying out over 100 mph. Corbin Carroll is the first Diamondback to hit a home run in the All-Star Game. Congrats to him on a historic achievement.

After the conclusion of the sixth inning, Major League Baseball put on a touching tribute for the late, Hank Aaron. Reminiscing April 8, 1974… “they came to see him pass the Babe.” Yes, when the Braves icon hit number 715. Footage of this very moment still gives baseball enthusiasts chills. Nevertheless, images and videography commemorating Aaron was flashed directly onto the field. It was nothing short of spectacular.

Hank was a 25-time All-Star and a recipient of the Presidental Medal of Freedom. A 1982 Hall of Fame inductee with 700 HRs and 3,000 hits. Who has also been named to the MLB All-Century Team. Aaron was the All-Star of All-Stars; he will be missed.

While the league honored “Hammerin Hank;” the All-Star players continued to honor his legacy by hammering at the plate. If fans were worried about the AL being shutout, their fears were set aside in the seventh. The A’s Brent Rooker crushed a 3-run home run that finally put the American League on the scoreboard, 3-6.

Still during the top of the seventh, Kansas City Royals’ Maikel Garcia is walked on a full count. He next steals to second and thanks to a throwing error by catcher Goodman; gets to third base. Bobby Witt Jr. grounds out but this still allows Garcia to come on home. It’s now 4-6! We got ourselves a game!

Would the AL pull an upset? Or would the National League hang on to win? Top of the ninth, the AL got several quick hits off of Padres closer, Robert Suarez. Thus, making the score 5-6. The pressure was ON. Mets closer Edwin Diaz came in to attempt to put things to rest. But… the AL TIES IT UP! It’s 6-6!

However, the National league has an opportunity and path to victory in the bottom of the ninth. But they would not be successful. It would remain tied. Leading to a Home Run Swing-Off Tiebreaker. The rules:

  • 3 Players from each team
  • 3 Swings from each player
  • Teams Alternate
  • Team With most home runs wins the All-Star Game

Simple. Brent Rooker got the AL to a hot start with 2 HRs, Arozarena added one giving the American League a 3HR lead. Could the NL comeback? Well, the NL were down two HRs (3-1); but Kyle “Baseballs of Steel” Schwarber (named 2025 ASG MVP) knocked three homers out the park! Giving the National League the victory in the Swing-Off and the 2025 All-Star Game!

What a Midsummer Classic. Did you enjoy it? And what was your favorite part? Until next year, congratulations to the National League.
