2024 Paralympics Day One: United States Wins Three Silver Medals
The 2024 Paralympics Day One events are in the books. And Team USA was able to stand on the podium three times. By winning some hardware in swimming events. Some other events that got underway today was men’s rugby as well as men’s basketball.
However, the women took to the pool and it was one great race after another! Which swimming events were on the schedule? A few finals, including the:
- Women’s 50M Freestyle S6 Final
- Women’s 50M Freestyle S10 Final
- And finally the Women’s 100M Butterfly S13 Final
The three women to get Team USA on the medal count board are: Grace Nuhfer (butterfly); Christie Raleigh Crossley (50M/S10); and Elizabeth “Ellie” Marks (50M/ S6). Congratulations on your medals ladies. Way to represent in the pool on Day one!
Yes, winning three medals is very good for the American delegation; however, they are starting off a bit slow thus far. Out of every country to have ever participated in the Paralympic Games, Team USA has won the medal count the most times. However, after day one they find themselves with an uphill battle on their hands.
In the medal count the USA is in 16th place. This is due to no gold medals being won yet. After an American athlete wins gold this will quickly change and most likely shoot the U.S. into the top ten. China has won the most gold medals (4) and have five overall. Great Britain has 6 medals, and Italy is racking up the hardware with 9 medals! 2 gold, 2 silver and 5 bronze.

However, don’t give up on Team USA just yet. History shows that they always tend to perform well. According to Paralympic.org, “The USA has topped the Para athletics medal table at nine Paralympic Games, more than any other country. Since the first Paralympic Games in Rome in 1960, 3,027 gold medals have been awarded in the sport. The USA has won the most with 385.”
So then, it is not over. There is still plenty of events and competition on the way. What is going down tomorrow? Well, you can look forward to Team USA participating in more swimming, as well as shooting and rowing.
