2024 NFL Honors: Prince Harry Presents Award to Cameron Heyward; Leaves Him Shocked
Imagine having royalty fly all the way out to give you an award. Well that’s exactly what happened to Cameron Heyward during the 2024 NFL Honors ceremony. And Cameron thought it was the coolest thing ever.
Actually, Heyward was straight up shocked over the whole incident. The U.S. SUN confirms Cameron’s moment of disbelief. They report,
“The Duke of Sussex, 39, appeared on stage in Las Vegas to present the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, just hours after jetting back from London.
The Walter Payton Man of Year Award is the league’s highest honor and acknowledges a player for his outstanding community service off the field, as well as his outstanding play on it.
The surprise appearance came just hours after Harry spent 26 hours visiting King Charles on Tuesday following his father’s cancer diagnosis.
Receiving the gong, Pittsburgh Steelers DE Cameron Heyward said, “Classic. ‘Prince freakin’ Harry. I’m in shock. That’s Prince Harry.”
So, an epic moment for Heyward. However, Cameron then decides to have everyone in the audience turn on their “waterworks.” There wasn’t a dry eye in the room once Cameron mentions his late father.
Heyward is the son of NFL Pro Bowler, Craig Heyward. Craig unfortunately passes away in 2006 from a brain tumor. During his acceptance speech; Cameron confidently and emotionally mentions the two men that helped him to be worthy of honor tonight. He says,
“When I talk about my dad, he wore No. 34. He’s been with me the entire time. He’s been with me every step of the way. But I know there was another No. 34 who was helping me. This man Walter Payton.”

Very well said Heyward. It takes a village to raise a man… and apparently, to mold an outstanding football player. Both ‘fatherly’ influences have obviously done him well.
However, getting back to Prince Harry for just a moment. We feel the Duke of Sussex’s lead up to presenting the Walter Payton Award was great too. PEOPLE magazine mentions a portion of Harry’s expressions. And they quote,
“‘[What] all you guys do on and off the field is truly remarkable,’ said Harry, 39, before presenting the award.
‘You are role models for millions in the way you carry yourselves and the way you give back. This final award — the highest honor — is all about serving your community. And there’s one special man we’d like to pay tribute to now. A player who goes above and beyond and whose extraordinary commitment to helping others is a reflection of his own story.’”
Prince Harry presenting this particular award was perfection. Harry has always been known for his own charitable activities and philanthropy. Therefore, we’re glad despite such a trying time; Harry was able to use the opportunity to come out and present to Heyward; and make his day in the process.
