2024 NBA Draft Will Change to 2 Day Format

2024 NBA Draft Will Change to 2 Day Format Upon Official Approval

Love the NBA Draft? Well, beginning this year you’ll be treated to not one day of action, but TWO. The 2024 NBA Draft will change to 2 day format after historically being a single day event. This shall become a reality after a final official approval.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news around midday Thursday. Wojnarowski reveals,

“ESPN Sources: The NBA is still working on final sign-off from the Players Association, but the 2024 NBA Draft is preparing to move to two days – June 26 and 27 – in Brooklyn. Wednesday for the first-round picks and Thursday for the second-round.”

The NBA seems to be following in the footsteps of the NFL. The NFL annually spreads their draft across multiple days. The extension allows of course, for more viewership which in turn can provide more advertising revenue.

Right now the NBA Draft for 2024 is scheduled for June 27. Literally, four days after a potential Game 7 in the NBA Finals. Kind of cutting things close. Nevertheless, if all goes well and approvals go through, the NBA will just grab an extra day before; and proceed by kicking off the festivities on June 26.

However, one component that could make this move a success or complete failure; is slightly being overlooked. The fans. Do the fans even want this? Will they tune in for day two after the first rounders are already picked?

Of course, this will allow more fans to attend the event if they wish and the NBA could create more activities in order to make their multiple extravaganza more appealing. However, there still needs to be a demand for this type of decision. One aspect the NBA may be banking on are recent viewership numbers. According to Statista,

“The 2023 NBA Draft was shown on ESPN and ABC, and attracted a record high average of 3.74 million viewers.”

Record breaking is good news. However, you have to factor in, how long people KEPT on watching the draft last year. NBA.com published their on report that states,

“Overall, the NBA Draft averaged 3,743,000 viewers across ESPN (both rounds) and ABC (first round only). The average audience was up 23 percent from last year. 2023… is the most watched NBA Draft ever on any network, according to Nielsen. The first round averaged 4,928,000 viewers across ESPN and ABC. Up 24 percent from last year’s (2022) first round on both platforms. It peaks with 6,085,000 viewers in the 8 PM ET quarter hour.”

With the NBA Draft numbers going up, it’s easier to see why the NBA wants to capitalize on such interest. Additionally, changing the draft format may also help teams in the end. According to Wojnarowski, teams are “frustrated by the chaotic speed of the second round.”

Therefore, having a full day two for the second round could help alleviate such a problem. Providing more time for team planning as well as trades. Thus, making everyone happier. More time for teams, more money for the NBA; and more basketball content for NBA fans. Win-win.
