2024 MLB Draft Lottery- Order is Taking Shape
It is almost time for the 2024 MLB Draft Lottery. A newer, more modern way of trying to fairly allow teams to draft young talent. Since back in the day, things occurred more simply.
As Major League Baseball explains it,
“Once upon a time, and for a long time, Major League Baseball’s final regular-standings would; [for the most part]; determine the following year’s Draft order. Take the reverse order of standings and, voila, that’s how teams would pick.”
Simple. Easy. Efficient. Yet, that is not the way any longer. Mostly due in part to the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Therefore, what is the new drafting method? Once more, MLB explains,
“Starting last year (2022), thanks to the latest Collective Bargaining Agreement, [the] script has changed. Now, the non-playoff teams are entered into a lottery for the top six picks in the Draft. The lottery will take place at the Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tenn., on Tuesday, Dec. 5. This year, 17 of the 18 non-playoff teams are eligible for the lottery.”
Winter meetings begin in one week; therefore, this is one aspect of the meetings that will be very exciting. Moreover, since the draft includes a lottery there is a lot not known. However, there are a few helpful details to keep in mind. Details like who forfeits spots and what not.
The ’24 Draft order is taking shape ahead of next Tuesday’s lottery:
▪️ Cardinals forfeit 2nd pick for signing Gray
▪️ Twins get comp pick
▪️ Yankees, Mets, Padres’ picks to drop 10 spots
▪️ D-backs, O’s get PPI picks

SNY TV’s Joe DeMayo revealed some news regarding the Mets. Whose 2023 season was not the stellar year they were hoping for at all. For instance, at the trade deadline the Mets let go a plethora of players; in order to reshape and revamp for the future.
Nevertheless, the dismal season could help the Mets experience light at the end of the tunnel. Being able to draft high could result in getting a very good young player for the future. Regarding this scenario, DeMayo writes,
“The MLB Draft lottery is a week from tomorrow. The Mets have the 7th best odds to get the No. 1 pick. If their pick falls outside of the top 6 it will drop 10 spots due to exceeding the luxury tax by > $40M.
If their pick falls 1-6 then their second selection will drop 10 spots.”
