2023 Roberto Clemente Award Nominees: Outstanding Men in Their Communities
It’s that time of year again, when the baseball realm recognizes the outstanding efforts of ball players and athletes on as well as off the field. This year the 2023 Roberto Clemente Award Nominees include a record holder, a Brave, Friar, Ray and an awesome guy from the ‘City of Brotherly Love.’ Did we give you enough hints in order to guess a name or two?
Well, don’t worry, we are not going to hold you in suspense any longer (names are finally starting to trickle out from teams; as more come out we will update the list till all 30 names are below. The Roberto Clemente nominees for 2023 are:
- San Diego Padres Tim Hill
- New York Yankees Aaron Judge
- Atlanta Braves Matt Olsen
- Philadelphia Phillies Kyle Schwarber
- Tampa Bay Rays Shane McClanahan
What a great set of guys! All are deserving of these nominations and we are sure that it will be a very tough final choice and decision. Yet, what is this award for and how did this award come about?
2023 Roberto Clemente Award Nominees: Outstanding Men in Their Communities
There are many ways to describe this important honoring; however, the best way is this simple description from Wikipedia which states, “The [Roberto Clemente Award honors the] player that “best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual’s contribution to his team.”
Baseball teams choose their nominee for the year then a panel as well as fans vote (online) to recognize one person. Past recipients have been: Willie Mays, Derek Jeter, Tony Gwynn, Justin Turner, Tim Wakefield, Albert Pujols, Clayton Kershaw, Sammy Sosa, Steve Garvey, Anthony Rizzo and Pete Rose.
Nevertheless, this was not the award’s original name. Originally it was known as the Commissioner’s Award. it has been around for over 50 years, being presented by MLB since 1971.
However, beginning in 1973, the award was renamed after MLB legend, Roberto Clemente. Clemente was tragically killed in an airplane accident. The ball player at the time of his unfortunate accident was busy trying to help others less fortunate.
This is the reason the MLB unanimously decided to change the name of this award. Thus, following the death of Roberto in a plane crash while he was delivering supplies to victims of the Nicaragua earthquake; the name changes to the Roberto Clemente Award.

Very fitting. Additionally, many men have now come after him, in order to continue his legacy and efforts by courageously and selflessly helping others. This world can be unfair, but together we make it a tad better for each other.
This season’s nominations exemplify hard work and care. It is refreshing to see athletes be superstars on and off the field. Therefore, congratulations to all the nominees, you all are worthy and merit this honor.
