2023 Padres Season Results

2023 Padres Season Results: Fernando Tatis Jr.

Going into 2023 there were a lot of questions about Fernando Tatis Jr. and how his season would play out after surgery and suspension. There’s a lot to glean and dissect when it comes down to the 2023 Padres season results. However, let’s focus on El Niño.

For instance, during his entire career so far, the one flaw about Fernando has been that he is always hurt; therefore, he is missing a lot of playing time. We really wondered going into the 2023 season if he’d be able to play a full season at an elite level. Especially, coming off not one, but two major surgeries, and a 80 game suspension. So then, what are the results?

Per Sammy Levitt:

257 batting average, 25 home runs, 33 doubles, 78 RBIs, .771 OPS

Tatis played in 141 games missing only one game that he was eligible to play in. Additionally, TATI shows dominance coming in second among major league baseball outfielder’s with 27 defensive runs saved.

Tatis never complained. He did exactly what was expected of him to redeem himself. He went from having no position and looking somewhat lost in the outfield to playing gold glove right field defense. Oh, and he stole home and robbed a couple home runs.

Is Tatis playing like he was before surgery? No. Is he still amazing? Yes!

Nevertheless, this season helps quiet the naysayers. Fernando definitely showed flashes of a guy, that wasn’t successful because of some performance-enhancing substance. His natural born talent is shining through, loud and proud.

Yet, truth be told, Tatis also just looked like a guy who didn’t have the health necessary to properly strengthen himself for a full season; and he ran out of gas. Not as many home runs this year. But still good enough to be in top tier discussion.

But if you told us before the season about the kind of numbers, Fernando would have in 141 games. I think we would’ve all taken it; and thus be pretty content with these stats as his first year back. Good is good.

Now the question moving forward, is if this is the version of Tatis the Padres will get going into 2024 and beyond? Or will he be like a Ronald Acuna, upper level player? Taking things to the next level of performance; or back to what it used to be in 2021.

He’s young, so there is time for us all to witness some more greatness. Especially, now that Fernando will have a full off-season without any injuries to rehab; and be able to fully strengthen himself for the season. Very curious to see which version of Tatís Jr. we will get in 2024. Aren’t you?
