The 2006 World Series witnessed a classic clash between two storied franchises; the St. Louis Cardinals and Detroit Tigers. Let’s take a little trip down memory lane to see how the Cardinals emerged as champions. We’ll focus on their heroes, bumps along the way, and the importance of the tenth World Series victory.

The Cardinals started 2006 with a dedicated fan base for whom winning the World Series title was the ultimate dream. The team was managed by Tony La Russa and was an offensive powerhouse. Their roster boasted the young and powerful Albert Pujols and slugger third baseman Scott Rolen. The pitching was also on point with rookie Adam Wainwright and Jeff Suppan, an established veteran.

However despite their talent, the road to the World Series was still a bumpy ride. They faced stiff competition in the National League Central Division. But the team claimed the division title by a mere one-game margin against the Houston Astros. The Cardinals held on to clinch the division after an Astros’ loss to the Atlanta Braves on the last day of the season.

Of course once they reached the playoffs they faced an uphill climb. Although they were considered underdogs to the San Diego Padres they won the series 3-1. Then they overcame the New York Mets in a nail-biter of a National League Championship Series (NLCS), which went to seven games; the Cardinals’ Yadier Molina hit a walk-off homer in the final game of the series.

And so the World Series came down to the Cardinals versus the Detroit Tigers. A team with a strong pitching lineup headed by Justin Verlander, a power pitcher on the ascent. The Cardinals took Game 1 with the help of their starting pitcher, rookie Anthony Reyes. The Tigers matched the Cardinals in game 2 with five-time Gold Glove award winner Kenny Rogers pitching for the win.

However, the Cardinals’ pitchers stepped up their performance in the following games. And that made the difference. Wainwright and Suppan were solid and stymied the Tigers’ offense. Pujols and Rolen were the key players in the offense putting up runs. Eventually, the Cardinals won the series in five games winning in a 4-1 advantage.

Winning the 2006 World Series solidified their status as one of the most successful franchises in the history of baseball. Bringing home their tenth World Series trophy. This victory also paved the way for the Cardinals’ revival. With players like Pujols and Wainwright the team had success for a number of years.

A Series for the Ages

To say the home crowd at Busch Stadium was excited is beyond an understatement. And more than that winning the series united the people of St. Louis in a spirit of brotherhood. Everyone rejoiced as the Cardinals won, and it  brought the city of St. Louis together in a way that had never been seen before. The Cardinals won the heart of the St. Louis community and became a genuine treasure to its residents.
