16-Year Old Track Star Quincy Wilson Qualified For 400m Finals
How does it feel to compete against grown men almost twice your age? And win a chance to go to the Olympics. I can’t answer that question, but there’s a new phenom who can. 16-year old track star Quincy Wilson answered that question when he qualified for the men’s 400m finals. In one qualifying heat, he not only won the heat. But he also clocked in at 44.66 seconds to set an under-18 world record. He then proceeded to break his newly set record two days later. His official time of 44.59 beat the prior 44.66 record. And it was a personal best time for the youngster.
He then competed against long-time veterans such as Bryce Deadmon and Vernon Norwood and grabbed a third place finish in the heat. Wilson was able to kick it in to high gear to chase down the other competitors with about 50m to go. The crowd could be heard cheering loudly as he made his come from behind push to secure that third place finish. His time was good enough to earn the fourth seed in the 400m finals.
So what do we know about this upstart 16-year old that is quickly making a name for himself? Well he doesn’t have a driver’s license yet, so he’ll need someone to drive him to his events, lol. And apparently he is a fierce competitor. His coach, Joel Lee told NBC that, ” he would not be afraid of the moment [competing in trials].” He’s from Maryland and currently attends Bullis High School in Potomac, MD.

Wilson does his homework both in and out of school. He told NBC Sports: “I know that last 100 was going to be hard,” he said. “I’ve been studying these guys. Last year I was in the stands watching them, so. I’m really out here now, and I’m competing with them. I’m so thankful to be in this moment.”
If Wilson makes it, he would be the youngest track and field male Olympian, according to Bill Mallon, an Olympics historian. And he already has a deal with New Balance.
I guess it’s safe to say this kid is going places. And in just a couple of hours the nation will find out if Wilson will be going to Paris. The final will be at 9:59 p.m. ET tonight.
